Thursday Club

The mission of the Thursday Club is to provide the young men of Bethel, and the surrounding neighborhood, ages 8 to 17, with an opportunity to fellowship in a Christian setting.

Purpose

The Thursday Club, which meets each Thursday at 6:30 pm., is a weekly fellowship ministry for young men ages 8 17.

Background

The Thursday Club, in its 10th year of existence, is the result of the vision and leadership of Pastor Sylvester Beaman of Bethel AME Church in Wilmington, Delaware. His vision was born out of his experience in ministering to a troubled and now imprisoned young man who had been raised in the church. The good Pastor asked the young man: "How do you think the church could have helped you stay away from your current situation?" The young man replied: "It would have been nice to have more interaction with the men of the church to discuss things with." Pastor Beaman asked Dr. George Adams to serve as the Founding Coordinator of the Thursday Club. Dr. Adams served in this capacity for five years. He, then, handed the reigns to the current Coordinators, Timothy T. Leath and Warren Howell. The Thursday Club started with Dr. Adams and a group of ten male youth members. It has now grown into ministry consisting of two coordinators, three mentors and over fifty male youth members!!

Affiliations

The Thursday Club is governed by rules incorporated within the bylaws of the Sons of Allen. The Thursday Club Coordinators sit on the Executive Boards of the Sons of Allen (SOA) and the Christian Youth Ministries (CYM). The Thursday Club also has a partnership with the West End Neighborhood House.

Typical Monthly Schedule

  • 1st Thursday: Study Hall/Rap Session
  • 2nd Thursday: Annual Project (Health & Wellness, Stock Market, Education, etc)
  • 3rd Thursday: Spiritual Enrichment (i.e. Bible Study)
  • 4th Thursday: Activity (Movie, Bowling, Skating, etc)
  • 5th Thursday: Rap Session
